Liposuction or liposculpture is a procedure in which fat is removed or aspirated in certain body areas with very fine tubes or cannulas. Liposuction is one of the most performed procedures in plastic surgery. The goals of liposuction are to improve the body contour and not to lose weight. It is not indicated in overweight people or persons who have lost a lot of weight and have excess skin. However it is an excellent tool to improve the body contour in patients who have a normal body mass index and have local fat deposits.
Liposuction is mostly performed under local anesthesia; when large areas have to be treated or when the patient is very anxious, it can be performed under general anesthesia, but we prefer local anesthesia. After the procedure, a special garment has to be worn (lipopanty) for 4 to 6 weeks to help the skin to return to the normal state and to prevent irregularities and edema. Liposuction/liposculpture is an aesthetic procedure, therefore it is never reimbursed by the health insurance (mutuality or hospitalization insurance).
