Pediatric plastic surgery or congenital surgery is one of the fields of interest of the Department of Plastic Surgery of the University Hospital Ghent. Pediatric plastic surgery is performed in infants with a congenital or acquired malformation that needs to be corrected surgically. Dependent on the severity, surgery has to be performed early in life or at a later age.

Congenital malformations are present from birth, they develop early during the pregnancy. Causes are genetic, environmental (for example medication) or by a combination. Often the direct cause can not be found. Examples include cleft lip and palate, congenital heart defects.
Acquired malformations develop later or after birth by external factors. Examples include deformation of the skull due to preference positioning of the head, clubfeet.

The plastic surgeon mostly corrects soft tissue and bony defects. Different topics will be discussed on this site; by clicking on "Pediatric Surgery" these topics will appear.
